Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
We want to transform an unused space into a professional space available to everyone within the school.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
At first, it was just going to be me and Molly for our project, but Kayla joined because she wanted to be part of a group. We had several ideas that we wanted to do. One of our ideas was not plausible because there were no open rooms for that project, and one of them just was not going to get done if we decided to do two at once. We wanted to combine a few of them into Room 110, but it would not have been professional enough if we had.
We started off with a really good attitude and mindset and were all ready to work, but we kind of hit a slide throughout the school year. We are getting our project done, but if we kept the same attitude we could have been done by now. We have had a journey trying to get faculty approval and talking to different administrative officials, and it has been interesting to see how comfortable everyone in the group is now with authoritative adults.
The past few weeks have been rough for our Genius Hour project. For a little bit, a few of us did not really get along that well because we have all been stressed about this project and want it to our best work, and we have different views on that. We have different standards of “best”, so it has been a little shaky getting everyone to compromise. All-in-all, I have been fortunate enough to work with these girls and have been happy to work with them.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
Within my group we shared our learning through communication. We took into account what each of us learned, and talked about those findings. Although sometimes our communication was lacking, we were still able to share what we learned. We also share our learnings through our Genius Hour pages and that is where all of our information goes.
I hope that within our group’s communication we all learn how to work well with others. I also hope that my group members learn the dangers of procrastinating. I also hope that we learn how to keep the dynamic of a group project positive and make sure we all work well together. I hope other people take away these things, and how much work is required to do a project like this.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
I feel that our Genius Hour project was a bit of a mess. Honestly, we were not as organized as I had hoped we would be and we did not end up getting everything done that we had planned. If I were to redo my project, I probably would have done it alone because then I would have been able to get everything done that was planned and only have myself to blame if it did not go the way I wanted it to.
If working with the same group, I would have taken more initiative. I would have stepped up, and forced everyone to use our time more wisely. I think we just ended up slacking off with this project and that we assumed we had more time than we actually did, which really negatively impacted our idea and our goals.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
During this project, we did have some accomplishments along with our setbacks. We really developed a skill of working with administrative adults, that might seem intimidating to others. We have tried our hardest to work one-on-one with Mr. Roberts, and, for the most part, have succeeded in this feat. We have needed to approach him and other faculty throughout the school to try to make our project come to life.
We have also accomplished working together as a group. We have always been able to talk about all of our ideas, and have never been afraid to say anything about this project. It has been a really inclusive environment and has made working on this project a lot easier.
